Amazon Giant Migratory Catfish Species: connecting the Amazon from the Andes to the Atlantic Ocean (CMS Side Event)

Amazonian giant catfishes took center stage at the Convention on Migratory Species as representatives and researchers from the Brazilian Ministry of Environment, Wildlife Conservation Society, SERFOR Peru and the Federal University of Pará discussed the reasons for listing dorado and piramutaba (manitoa) in CMS Appendix II at a side event "Amazon Giant Migratory Catfish Species: connecting the Amazon from the Andes to the Atlantic Ocean". The Amazon Waters Alliance celebrated the listing of dorado and piramutaba (manitoa) in Appendix II of the Convention on Migratory Species. This was a key milestone for the conservation of migratory Amazonian fishes, their interconnected habitats in the Amazon Basin and the well-being of local communities. The Alliance recognizes the importance of this decision for the sustainable management of these species and thus for maintaining biodiversity and the well-being of human populations.
