Department of Ichthyology of the Museum of Natural History of the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos


The Ichthyology Department of the Museum of Natural History of the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos (MUSM) is mainly dedicated to the taxonomic inventory and knowledge of the distribution and ecology of fish species that inhabit the continental waters of Peru and the Neotropics, with emphasis on Amazonian fishes. The department carries out research projects that include systematic ichthyology, ichthyogeography, fish ecology, fish of economic importance (consumption or ornamental), conservation aspects, resource management and biological-fish monitoring in cooperative research projects with various national and foreign institutions.The Peruvian Amazon includes approximately 82% of the total species recorded in Peru (Ortega et al., 2012), and the Ichthyology department of MUSM has the mission to characterize, analyze and publish this high diversity of fishes.
